Memorial Day Safety Tips
In the US, we like to think of Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer. It’s a big travel weekend as we head for a beach, lake, or mountain – really anywhere we can spend the weekend in the sun.
As you plan your holiday activities, always remember to keep safety top of mind. Grilling on the deck with family and friends is great fun, but more people in close quarters means more potential hazards. Leaving your home unattended for several days could bring an unpleasant surprise or two. With that in mind, we share these Memorial Day safety tips.
Grilling Safety
It’s also an American tradition to fire up the grill, maybe for the first time of the season. And of course, anywhere there’s fire, there’s potential danger. Before you get started, remember these safety tips.
- Never leave a grill unattended. Always have a responsible adult stand watch
- Before you light the fire make sure the cooking grate and other surfaces are clean of grease and other debris that could ignite
- Keep children and pets away from hot surfaces
- Be sure the grill is away from walls, awnings, and other structures that could catch fire
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
Water Damage Prevention
We get calls for help all the time from folks who went out of town for several days and returned to find a water line had broken (think toilet overflowed, dishwasher or washing machine leaked) and water was standing 2 inches deep everywhere. If you’re traveling this 3-day weekend, consider going to your main water shutoff valve and turning off the water. Even if a water line does happen to break while your gone, you’ll minimize the damage by preventing a continuous flow.
